Coming Full Circle: A Father and Daughter’s Shared Path in Medicine
For Envision emergency medicine physicians Dr. Charles Phillips and Dr. Tierney Phillips, caring for patients is more than a profession. It’s a shared passion between father and daughter as they practice side by side at the same hospital, serving their Dallas community.
The Beginning of a Shared Journey
In April 2022, Dr. Charles Phillips stood on one side of the graduation stage at his alma mater, Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center School of Medicine, wearing his cap and gown. Across from him stood his daughter, Dr. Tierney Phillips, as he presented her with her medical degree.
Their shared journey began years earlier, when Dr. Tierney Phillips worked as an emergency department scribe for five and a half years, learning from her father and the clinicians around her.
“It gave me the opportunity to watch how he cared for patients – the empathy he had, the way he listened intently and his genuine desire to connect with patients and help them in their time of need,” she said. “I soon realized that I could see myself practicing medicine, too.”
For Dr. Charles Phillips, medicine was also a family calling. Inspired by generations of physicians before him, he knew by age 12 that he wanted to follow a similar path. Now, watching his daughter build her own career brings that legacy full circle.
“I’m very, very proud of her,” he said. “She's an incredibly smart, caring and empathetic physician.”
Today, they practice alongside one another as Envision emergency medicine physicians, occasionally sharing shifts with many of the same colleagues who knew Dr. Tierney Phillips when she was a scribe.
More Than Colleagues
After completing her residency, Dr. Tierney Phillips returned to Medical City Arlington as an Envision emergency medicine physician.
“Coming back as a physician felt seamless,” she said. “They were like family. We already had that connection and trust.”
For Dr. Charles Phillips, that sense of belonging has been a constant throughout his career.
“You always go where you feel most comfortable, where you feel like you’re a part of something,” Dr. Charles Phillips said.
His practice joined Envision in 2017, and he still works alongside many of his original partners. For him, Envision combines the close-knit relationships of a smaller practice with the opportunities of a national organization.
“I’ve always felt that for her, there would be room for growth here. Whether she wants to work in the pit, be a Site Medical Director or be involved nationally, I’ve had physicians under my wing do that. I want her to have that same opportunity, and Envision offers that.”
The flexibility of emergency medicine also allowed Dr. Charles Phillips to be present for his family, from field hockey games to school activities, while building his career.
As Dr. Tierney Phillips begins her own career with Envision, she values that same sense of support.
“I like working with everyone. It’s very collaborative, and we have a really good team and environment.”
Without the responsibilities of running a practice, she can focus on what matters most to her: caring for patients.
“I’m not worried about anything other than, in that moment, taking care of my patient and getting them to where they need to be – whether that’s laying the foundation for primary care or getting them admitted to see a cardiologist or surgeon.”
And while they may share a last name and a profession, their colleagues have found an easy way to tell them apart: Dr. Tierney Phillips is “T,” and Dr. Charles Phillips is “Pops.”
A Strong Sense of Purpose
For both physicians, their connection to medicine extends beyond their careers. It's rooted in family, community and the opportunity to help others.
“I still remember my grandpa, who was an OB-GYN, and patients being so happy that he was taking care of them. That really impacted me,” Dr. Charles Phillips said
It's a lesson both physicians carry into their own practice.
“We try to go into every shift, every day, knowing ‘I’m blessed to have a job, I’m blessed to help people, I’m blessed to meet people in their time of need and provide that care and reassurance.’ Today, with a lot of healthcare industry issues, some of them need that extra touch of just sitting down with them and talking to them.”
For Dr. Charles Phillips, that connection begins with listening.
“If you really listen to your patients, they’ll tell you what’s wrong,” Dr. Charles Phillips said. “And always listen to the voice in the back of your head. If something doesn’t seem right, it probably isn’t.”
For Dr. Tierney Phillips, practicing alongside her father has added another dimension to their relationship.
“Yes, he’s my dad, but he’s also a doctor and a good clinician, and getting to learn from him has added another layer to our relationship,” she said.
“She’s an excellent doctor, and she’s just going to continue to grow – and maybe take care of me one day,” he exclaimed.
